WHITEOUT

Every autumn since 1981 the Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition has exhibited new and innovative chairs in Denmark. The 2010 exhibition will for the first time ever be exhibited abroad from the 2nd to 8th of April at Tokyo Design Center. White is the new black in the Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition 2010, where the theme “Whiteout” refers both to the colour white and to the weather phenomenon, where snow, fog or haze reduces visibility. But the Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition promises a clear outlook and 38 white chairs measuring 80 x 80 x 120 cm. Again this year, the association's members and the guest exhibitors have unfolded their playful side and developed 38 innovative prototypes condensed from a sea of snow-white concepts, technical challenges and painstaking detailing. Nanna Ditzel's Trinidad chair, Poul Kjærholm's PK24 and Hans J Wegner's Circle chair all came into the world as experiments in the Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition. The Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition began in 1981 and is a non-commercial association of furniture manufacturers and designers that is independent of organisations, government and other stakeholders. The association's main purpose is to create and present innovative furniture prototypes once a year. Only time will tell whether some of the works go as far as Ditzel's, Kjærholm's or Wegner's classics, but it remains a fact that the Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition represents the best of the best in contemporary Danish furniture design year after year without commercial constraints. Whiteout opened in Denmark in October 2010. Tokyo, being the design hub of Asia and where Danish furniture is highly appreciated was chosen as a unique location to showcase new possibilities of Danish furniture design. We wish to thank Tokyo Design Center for kindly offering us the space for the exhibition and for all the contributing partners that have made this exciting exhibition possible. The Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition is under the patronage of HRH Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark.
