High-Tech and Tradition
| Organized by Tokyo Design Center + 「High-Tech and Tradition」Exhibition Organising Committee |

What can architects do to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and solve global warming? Twenty architects from thirteen countries propose answers for the key issue of the 21st Century.
In Japan, the rigorous efforts made to solve the crisis of global warming by reducing carbon dioxide emissions are largely from an engineering viewpoint rather than an architectural one.
Those efforts are based on 20th Century science and technology, the very principles that escalated this global crisis. Internationally renowned architects from all over the world contribute to this exhibition by presenting ideal architectural solutions for the 21st Century. Drawing on the wisdom of the past, the proposals show how traditional architectural strategies for living in balance with nature may be re-interpreted for contemporary life and integrated with current technology to create a responsible and inspiring architecture culture.
A series of three public lectures will be held in conjunction with the exhibition.

Care for the People, Products for the People
- Designs by Tadao Shimizu and His Friends -

| Date |
20-28 September |
 |
 |

This exhibition is based on the concept of design being a cycle that begins in the imagination of people, is created by people, and the result of which are then returned to the people. By examining design from a perspective closer to the people, its diversity and potential is displayed.
As a product and environmental designer, Tadao Shimizu has devoted his efforts to the research and practice of comprehensive design from the diverse perspectives of universal design, community design, sustainable design and ecological design. He is anadvocate of symbiosis environment design. As a distinguished educator, Prof. Shimizu has also helped to develop the talents of many outstanding individuals.
Although planned to commemorate Prof. Shimizu’sretirement from Chiba University in March 2008, this exhibition is not a retrospective, but the declaration of a new beginning, and the first step in creating the platform for new activities along with his group of friends.
Consequently, the exhibition is composed of three sections: 1) new work from Shimizu’s furniture design, which forms part of his activities, 2) examples of joint development design as a result of collaboration between Environment Design Laboratory led by Shimizu at Chiba University, and external organizations, and 3) the work of Prof. Shimizu’s former students.
